the AIM service on your phone
Managing your
Buddy List® feature
General Questions
What
are the differences between the AIM service using the Wireless Web
and the AIM service on my desktop PC?
On your phone,
the main AIM page is used to view and send messages to your friends,
family members, and colleagues. Instead of opening multiple conversation
windows as you would on your computer, the AIM service on your phone
lists all conversations with your online and offline screen names,
and their current status, on one page.
The Conversations
List on your phone indicates new messages and your current conversations.
The AIM service on your computer accumulates all sent and received
messages for each conversation in a single window; the AIM service
on your phone displays new and previous messages for each conversation
in separate pages. During a conversation, the oldest messages can
be removed to make room for new ones.
In
addition, the AIM service on the desktop can handle virtually unlimited
conversations. Depending on your wireless service, the AIM service
for Web phones can handle only a limited number of simultaneous
conversations. Additional differences include:
What
is the Conversations List?
This list displays
all of your open conversations. The names in the list are sorted
in order of most recent activity. An asterisk (*) next to a screen
name indicates that you have new messages from this person.

The
AIM menu provides a number of options for using the AIM service
on your phone. Depending on your phone and wireless carrier, the
AIM menu may appear as a softkey option or as a link. For some
phones, this option is called the "List menu."
If
you have a screen name selected on the main AIM page, these menu
options may change to be targeted to actions that you can perform
on that specific screen name.
You
can use the this menu to:
-
Get
new messages and update the Conversations and Buddy lists
-
Send
new messages
-
Add
or delete screen names from the Buddy List feature
-
Change
your status and password
-

How
do I view my messages?
All ongoing
conversations are displayed in the Conversations list on the
main AIM page. Select a screen name in this list to display
the conversation associated with that name.
How
do I get notified when an instant message arrives?
Each time an
instant message is received, the AIM client generates an alert.
Depending on your phone, browser version, and alert settings, the
handset may generate an audio tone or vibrate, display an icon,
and/or flash an LED. Your phone may also display "Message from
AIM" and offer a function key to jump directly to the Buddy
List feature.
How
do I get notified when a buddy goes online?
The easiest
way to see when a screen name from your Buddy List feature has come
online is to set an alert that will notify you when this happens.
To do this, select the screen name who you want to set the alert
for, and then select Set Alert for screenname from
the AIM menu.
Once
the alert is set, there will be an exclamation mark (!) next to
the screen name in the main AIM page.
How
do I reply to an instant message?
From the
main AIM page, select the screen name to display the conversation.
Then, select the Reply option, as specified for your specific
phone and service.
What
is a Quick Reply?
Quick Replies
are a collection of predefined messages that you can use to
quickly send messages with minimal typing. Quick Replies include
"emoticons," simple greetings, and common phrases
used to coordinate activities with other people. After you select
a Quick Reply, you can add additional text to the message.
How
does the Buddy List feature work on my phone?
The Buddy
List feature works in much the same way as you use the Buddy List
feature on your computer. Like with the desktop AIM service, you
can see which screen names are online, send messages, and add
and delete screen names from this list.
The primary
difference is the use of the Mobile
Device group. If you are using AOL 4.0 or greater, AIM 4.0
or greater, or AIM Express, this group is automatically created
when you sign on to the AIM service for the first time. The Mobile
Device group holds 30 screen names that you can use to instant
message with from your phonethink of your Mobile Device
group as your Buddy List that you use when you're on the go.
What
do the different symbols next to screen names mean?
The status
symbols next to the screen names in the main AIM page indicate
the following:
|
|
*
|
New
Message. You have received a new message from this
screen name.
|
|
|

You will be alerted when this screen name signs on.

|
Depending on your phone and carrier, a period ( . ) or underscore
( _ ) might precede screen names to improve the readability of the
list.
Are
Buddy Groups supported?
Buddy Groups
are not supported by the AIM service using the Wireless Web. Instead,
it uses a single Buddy Group (called the Mobile
Device group),
which you can see in the PC-based Buddy List feature used by the
AOL, AIM, and AIM Express services.
How
do I send an instant message to someone in my Buddy List feature?
From the main
AIM page, select the screen name to access the message page. From
here, you can either type your message or select Quick Reply to
use a predefined message.
How
do I send an instant message to an unlisted screen name?
Select Send
Msg to . . . from the AIM menu. Then, enter the screen name
of the person who you want to send the message to and type your
message.
How
do I get new messages and update the Buddy List feature?
Select Get
New/Update List from the AIM menu.
How
do I add someone to my Buddy List feature?
Select Add
name to Buddy List from the AIM menu.
How
do I remove someone from my Buddy List feature?
On the main
AIM page, select the screen name that you want to delete and then
select Delete Buddy from the AIM menu.
How
do I reject messages from someone in my Buddy List feature?
On the main
AIM page, select the screen name of the user who you want to reject.
Then, select Reject Msgs from the AIM menu. After the user
is rejected, an X appears next to the screen name in the
main AIM page. Messages from this screen name will be rejected until
the current session ends.
To re-accept
messages from the rejected user, select the user's screen name in
the main AIM page. Then, select Accept Msgs from the AIM
menu. You'll be asked to confirm that you want to begin accepting
messages from this screen name. The screen name's status is updated
in the main AIM page. Alternatively, a rejected screen name is automatically
re-accepted when you send them a new message.
How
do I accept or reject messages from an unlisted screen name?
When you first
receive a message from someone who is not in your Buddy List feature,
you are asked to accept or reject messages from that screen name.
If you accept messages from this screen name, you can still reject
them later.
How
do I block someone in my Buddy List feature?
It's not possible
to block someone using the AIM service on your phone. However, you
can use the Block Buddy feature in the AIM or AIM Express service
on your computer to block further messages from that person.
How
do I change my online status?
To change your
status, select AIM Options from the AIM menu. Then, depending
on your current status, choose either either Set Status to Away
or Set Status to Available.
To change your
status to Offline, you must sign off.
How
do I change my AIM password?
You can change
the password associated with the screen name from your wireless
device, even if the screen name is shared with an AOL account or
other AIM clients. Changing this password applies to all logins
with the current screen name. If you change the password for your
screen name using the AIM service, you will also need to separately
update the password from the AIM client on your computer.
To change your
AIM password, select AIM Options from the AIM menu. Then,
select Change Password. You'll be prompted to enter your old password,
and your new password twice (to confirm the change).
| |
TIP:
|
To
avoid problems signing in to the AOL service and other versions
of the AIM service, it is not recommended that you change your
password from your phone. If you do change your password from
your phone, be sure to also change it from the AIM desktop service. |

What
is the maximum message size supported by the AIM service on my mobile
phone?
The absolute
maximum size of a message depends on your phone and carrier. The
average message size is less than 200 characters, and the AIM service
for Web phones can typically handle messages twice that size. Each
AIM conversation, including previous and latest messages, can display
about 600 characters total.
