Setting up your phone book is the easiest way to use the AIM® service with your text messaging phone.

Set up your phone book now

There are two ways you can set up your phone book:

  • Automatic method. If your carrier offers this service, you can download the AIM commands and up to 30 screen names from your Buddy List® feature to your phone from the Internet. Choose this option to determine if your carrier offers this service for your phone.

  • Manual method. You can manually type entries in your phone book to set up the AIM commands and your Buddy List feature.

Why set up your phone book?

You manage the AIM service and your Buddy List feature with AIM commands. To use a command, send a text message to the Instant Message (IM) number assigned to that command. IM numbers are like phone numbers and are assigned by your wireless carrier. For example, to sign on to the AIM service, send a text message to the IM number for the AIM-SignOn command.

You also use IM numbers to send messages to your friends, family members, and co-workers. When you sign on to the AIM service for the first time, up to 30 screen names in your Buddy List feature are automatically assigned IM numbers.

Because you'll need to keep track of the IM numbers for both the screen names in your Buddy List feature and for the AIM commands, create entries for them in your phone book. This way, you won't have to remember this information and it's ready for you every time you want to send a message. To send a message or to use a command, you just send a text message to the phone book entry.
